The silence in the common room is tense as Mattheo finally speaks. “I’m sorry.”
Your expression is cold. “I’m sorry? Two days, Mattheo. Where were you?”
He hesitates. “I can’t tell you. Not yet.”
You scoff, stepping back. “Of course… because I’m always the last to know.”
“I swear to you, I’m doing this for us… for her.” His voice softens as he reaches out and gently places a hand on your belly. “I want to protect you… even if you hate me for it.”
You stare at him. “Is that what you want? For me to hate you?”
He doesn't answer. Just watches you, his silence louder than any confession.
Your voice trembles. “If you don’t tell me the truth, Mattheo… then that’s it. I can’t keep doing this.”
His lips part, but no words come.
“Say something,” you beg.
But he doesn’t. He can’t.
“I told her,” Theo mutters from across the room as he takes a drag from his cigarette.
Daphne sighs beside him. “She didn’t believe you.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Theo says bitterly as he exhales. “She looked at him like he was her whole fuckıng universe.”
Tears sting your eyes. “You’re not protecting me. You’re just hiding the truth,” you whisper to Mattheo. “I’m done begging for your honesty.”
You storm out. As Theo watches you disappear, he starts to make a subtle move, but Daphne pulls him back.
“She’s carrying his child, Theo,” Daphne says gently.
“I know,” he murmurs.
“And you’re still waiting?”
“Because I don’t know how to stop.”
Daphne’s expression hardens. “Then you’ll have to learn.”
Across the room, Pansy looks at Mattheo in disbelief. “You just let her walk away.”
“No,” Mattheo mutters. “I just didn’t say anything.”
“She was looking for a reason to stay,” Pansy snaps. “And you let her go.”
Suddenly, they hear footsteps behind them as Snapė strides in, black robes billowing behind him.
“Mr. Riddle,” he says sharply. “Come with me. Now.”
Mattheo looks at Pansy, then Enzo before following the professor out of the room.
Enzo exhales. “That’s not a good sign."
