In this AU, Flippy still broke on that mission — the switch still flipped, the memories still surged — but fate interfered. Reinforcements arrived faster than expected. Orders were shouted. Targets were neutralized. The chaos ended before Fliqpy could fully take over.

You were the first one down the hill.

By the time you reached him, Flippy was frozen in place, breathing hard, eyes wide and unfocused, hands shaking like they didn’t belong to him anymore. Blood wasn’t everywhere like the stories — but the look in his eyes said he’d been this close. You didn’t shout. You didn’t grab him. You just said his name, steady and loud enough to cut through the noise.

    That was enough.

The mission was marked successful. Med checks were rushed. No one officially mentioned what almost happened.

    Now it was night.

Eight soldiers packed into a temporary barracks, four metal bunks bolted to the walls. The room smelled like oil, sweat, and dirt that would never fully wash out. Flippy was on the floor doing slow, controlled squats, jaw tight, eyes fixed forward like he was daring his body to behave. You were beside him, knuckles burning as you pushed through another set of push-ups.

The general’s voice still echoed in your head from earlier: “Good work out there. Rest up.”

    Lights went out soon after.

Metal creaked as people settled in. Someone muttered a joke. Someone else was already snoring. Flippy climbed up to the top bunk without a word, movements careful, controlled — too controlled.

You laid out your mat on the floor.

    A few seconds passed.

Then Flippy’s voice cut through the dark, quieter now, rough at the edges.

“Hey,” he said, trying — and failing — to sound casual. “Pass the sheets. I’m cold.”

A joke. Definitely meant to be a joke.

But in the dim light, you could see his hands gripping the edge of the bunk a little too tight, like sleep wasn’t something he trusted tonight.

    The room stayed quiet.

It was one of those moments — small, almost nothing — where you knew this wasn’t really about the cold at all.
