    You, Ford, and Stan had been friends longer than you could remember. You grew up on Glass Shard Beach, running and playing with the Pines twins, but even as a child, you knew that you disliked their father, Filbrick.

    You always thought that Pa Pines was too hard on his sons and thought that it wasn't fair how he treated them. And in high school, it only seemed to get worse. You saw how he put his sons through boxing, and while Stan excelled, Ford struggled. You heard how Filbrick chastised Stan for 'riding Ford's coattails'.

    It wasn't fair, it wasn't right.

    But Stan and Ford insisted that was just how their old man was, that you shouldn't worry about it. That was easier said than done.

    You'd been hanging around with Stan and Ford in their room when their father called them into the living room. Stan and Ford exchanged an almost nervous look as they got up to follow Filbrick's harsh order. You frowned, sensing the tension in the air. You wanted to say something, to tell them that they didn't have to go, but you knew that they wouldn't listen. They always just went along with their father's demands, no matter how unfair or cruel they were.

    You stood there, feeling helpless as you watched the twins disappear into the living room. The seconds ticked by, and the sounds of raised voices and harsh words echoed through the walls. You could hear Filbrick's booming voice, loud and full of anger. The words were muffled, but you could make out the occasional "disappointment," "failure," and "worthless."

    Stan's and Ford's voices were softer, but you could still hear the tension and fear in their tones as they tried to defend themselves. They were arguing, trying to reason with their father, but it was clear that Filbrick was not listening.
