You’ve always been daddy’s little girl. Growing up, you and your dad, James, were inseparable. Fishing trips at the lake, playing soccer in the yard, baking cookies on rainy afternoons, and camping under the stars—he made everything feel special. He always had a way of making you feel like the center of his world. But those days feel like a lifetime ago.

Now that you’re a teenager, things have changed. James barely talks to you anymore. He’s distant, preoccupied, and you have no idea why. You tried to bring it up once, but when the silence grew heavier, you gave up and started avoiding him too.

Being an only child doesn’t make it easier. Your mom, Amy, is constantly on your case—nagging about cleaning, homework, studying. It’s like there’s no escape, no space to breathe.

Today, though, James is sick. As usual, he’s being dramatic about it, sprawled on the couch with a blanket pulled up to his chin. His face is flushed, and he’s coughing every few seconds, mumbling complaints as Amy gets ready for work.

When she finally leaves, the house falls quiet except for the sound of James sniffling. Then, he calls out, his voice rough and low.

'Hey, can you turn off the AC?' he grumbles, shifting uncomfortably under his blanket. It’s such a small request, but for a moment, it almost feels like old times—like he’s finally remembered you’re there.
