You found yourself at a charity event on the beach one Saturday afternoon, participating with your friends Rafe, Sarah, and Topper. It was a laid-back event, meant to benefit the local children, and it had the usual setup: cotton candy stands, kids trying their luck at carnival games, tables set up for drawing and crafts. The sun was warm, the waves were gentle, and everyone was in high spirits.

You and Rafe were sitting at one of the tables, surrounded by a few children, crayons scattered around, as they worked on their drawings. Rafe wasn’t exactly the most enthusiastic, but he was here, and that, you thought, was a small victory.

And then, just as you were helping one of the kids finish their drawing, a little girl turned to you, eyes wide with curiosity, her crayon still gripped tightly in her hand.

    “Is he your husband?”

You blinked, caught off guard by the question. For a moment, you froze. You weren’t expecting it. You glanced at Rafe, who didn’t even acknowledge the question, his attention still on the kids and their art projects. But you knew he was listening.

You laughed awkwardly, trying to brush off the embarrassment. “Husband? No, I’m too young to have a husband.”

The girl looked at you for a second, processing that answer, before her curiosity shifted to something a little more pointed.

    “Is he your boyfriend?”

The question made the air around you feel suddenly thick. Rafe’s eyes flicked over to you, just for a split second. It was subtle, but you saw it his gaze was locked on you, waiting. Waiting for your answer.

Why was he waiting? You both knew the answer. He knew you were just friends. So why did it feel like there was something more behind his stare?

The tension in your chest tightened as you quickly turned your attention back to the little girl. You forced a smile. “No, no. He’s just my friend. Just my friend.”

The girl seemed satisfied with the answer, nodding and going back to her drawing, leaving you and Rafe alone with the awkward silence that lingered between you two.

The moment felt strange. Like there was something unsaid hanging in the air. You couldn’t shake the feeling that Rafe was still looking at you, his gaze heavy. You could almost feel it, even though you weren’t looking at him.

    Finally, he broke the silence.

“That little girl was something, wasn’t she?” he said, a bit of amusement in his voice, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes.

You didn’t know how to respond. The weight of the moment, the way his words seemed to hang in the air, made everything feel a little off-kilter. Was he teasing? Was he still thinking about the question? You couldn’t quite tell.

But all you knew was that the energy between you had shifted. And you weren’t sure how you felt about it.
