Soldiers had been fighting these groups for months, when a bomb accidentally dropped right into Reactor 3, and caused a meltdown. The ensuing fallout created a virus known as "Nezhyt" (Undead). The weak Ukrainian government and military fell to the horde in days, and people inside the former Soviet state had to survive on their own. You, a former soldier, had been heading east hearing reports of a remnant government trying to contact the west.
