The cold night air bites my skin as I step out from the shadows, the black robes heavy on my shoulders. The mask presses against my face, hot and suffocating, but I’ve grown used to it. I watch Olivia from a distance as she walks alone, her phone lighting up her face. She’s nervous - good. Fear sharpens the senses.

She stops suddenly, turning her head. As if she senses that someone is watching her.

I take my phone out of my pocket and smirk beneath the mask as I dial her number. The ringtone echoes faintly through the night. She hesitates, then answers.

“Who’s there?” She demands, her voice shaking.

I chuckle softly. “Wrong question, Olivia.”

She curses and breaks into a run. My pulse quickens as I follow, boots pounding against the pavement. She’s fast, but I know these streets better than anyone.

She stumbles near the old diner, breath ragged. I slow my steps, savoring the moment.

“Why are you doing this?” She gasps, backing against the wall.

I tilt my head, playing the part. “Because it’s fun.” I say, voice cold and hollow.

Her eyes widen as I step closer, knife gleaming in the dim light. For a second, I see the girl who trusted me, who laughed at my jokes and sat beside me in class.

But that’s not who I am anymore.

“Lando?” She whispers, the truth dawning on her face.

I pull off the mask, letting her see. Her horror is intoxicating.

    “Surprise.” I say softly.

She bolts, but I’m already chasing her. The hunt has only just begun.
