Rafe Cameron

Everything in you was telling you to go to Rafe after just watching him collide with JJ in the Enduro Race. You could still feel the dread and fear that had gripped you at the moment of impact. You wanted to wrap your arms around him, to feel his heart beating against your chest. Like it had that July 9th, when he’d met your plane at the airport. You could still feel the way his arms had wrapped you up so tightly. You remind yourself you didn’t get to do that anymore. He wasn’t yours.

you can plan for a change in the weather and time, but I never planned on you changing your mind

You breathe a sigh of relief when you see him get up and brush himself off. He’s moving. He’s okay. You turn to Sarah and decide to ask her the question that’s been on your mind since you saw him today.

“How’s he doing?” At least there was one benefit of being best friends with your ex’s sister-you could keep up with how he was doing. You got to still know pieces of his life.

so I’ll watch your life in pictures like I used to watch you sleep

“Rafe? You know him. He’s always the wronged party” she snaps, frustrated with you for still caring. She notices the panic that still lingers in your eyes, and her expression softens. “I didn’t want to tell you, but he’s been spending time with Sofia”

and I feel you forget me like I used to feel you breathe

Her words knock the breath out of you. You blink away the tears, noticing how Rafe is moving towards Sofia, the way he slings his arm around her. In that moment, you want the ground to swallow you up.

He glances your way as he walks past with her. Such a brief moment of eye contact but your skin burns from where his eyes land. You’re frozen in place, not sure if you should say something or just ignore him. All that you knew was you didn’t know how to be something he missed. His eyes linger on your lips, almost like he’s remembering how they used to feel pressed against his.

I never thought we’d have a last kiss
