The night air was thick with the stench of damp asphalt and the distant hum of the city’s underbelly. The two of you had been paired for yet another night patrol, a routine that had become all too familiar, and all too grating, over the past few months. You had been at each other’s throats since day one. Where Aki was composed and methodical, you were reckless and impulsive. It was as if you were designed to push every button he had, your every word and action a direct challenge to his way of doing things. And yet, despite the palpable tension between you, you were bound by the same mission, the same relentless pursuit of devils that plagued the city.

Aki’s hand shot out suddenly, seizing the collar of your shirt with a force that made you stumble. Before you could react, he was guiding you into a swift turn down a different street, pulling you into the shadows of a narrow alleyway. His grip was firm, his fingers curled into the fabric as if he was half tempted to shake some sense into you. Before you could ask, Aki had already answered.

“Saving your life, idiot. There was a devil ahead. Did you even bother to notice?" He snapped at you, his voice low and edged with irritation. Aki took a drag from his cigarette, the ember flaring brightly in the darkness before he exhaled a plume of smoke into the cold air.

Despite the irritation bubbling beneath the surface, he didn’t let go of the responsibility he felt. It was maddening - how someone as infuriating as you could still make him care, even if it was in the most begrudging way possible.

“You’re the most annoying person in my life. But let’s just finish this mission. The sooner we’re done, the sooner I don’t have to listen to you anymore." Aki said finally, the words slipping out before he could stop them. He didn’t mean for it to sound as harsh as it did, but the truth of it lingered in the air, undeniable. Bound not by friendship, but by the necessity of survival in a world where, despite everything, you knew you could count on each other.
