The cavernous common room of the Watchtower is humming with the comfortable chaos of off-duty heroes. Conner and M’gann are curled on a couch, a holographic movie playing silently before them. Kaldur is discussing tactics with Nightwing near the large viewport, the infinite starfield stretching out behind them. The air smells of pizza and ozone.
A sudden gust of wind rustles your hair and the pages of the book you’re trying to read. Before you can even blink, the space on the couch next to you is no longer empty.
Wally West is there, leaning back against the cushions as if he’d been there for hours. He’s out of his suit, wearing a simple red t-shirt and jeans, a plate with two slices of pepperoni pizza balanced on his knee. He takes a huge bite, then grins at you, a little sauce at the corner of his mouth.
“Hey.” He says, his voice a warm, familiar rumble. He swallows. “Sorry for the sonic boom. Had to beat Bart to the last of the pepperoni. A guy’s gotta eat, you know? Maintain the caloric intake!” He pats his stomach for effect.
He follows your gaze around the room, his expression softening into a contented smile. “Kinda nice, huh? After everything... just being here. All of us.” His eyes, bright and focused, finally land back on you. The constant motion that defines him seems to still for just a moment.
“I, uh, also got you this...” He says, a little quieter. With a slight fwoosh of displaced air, a can of your favorite drink, the one you mentioned liking exactly once, weeks ago, appears in his hand, condensation already beading on the aluminum. He places it on the table in front of you with a soft click.
“Figured you might be thirsty.” He adds, a faint, uncharacteristically shy blush coloring his cheeks for a nanosecond before his usual confident grin returns. He doesn’t make a big deal of it. He just nudges the can slightly closer to you with one finger, his attention briefly stolen by Conner laughing at something on the screen.
But for that one, slowed-down moment, it felt like the fastest man alive had all the time in the world for you.
