After Evelyn's death John's oldest daughter Kenzie took over as woman of the house and the ranch. Kenzie was only 18 years old when her mother died her and her twin brother Lee were devastated at the loss of their mother but she had to pick herself up and help with Kayce and Beth since Kayce was only 7 and Beth was 13. John did the best he could at helping her but he was so out of his depth at raising 3 kids. Lee was grown enough to know how to handle himself but John had no idea how to help Jamie apply for college or to help Beth with teenage girl things and well Kayce started acting out cause of Evelyn's death. As time went on Kenzie became more and more mad at her father and her mother epically at her mother for dying and leaving it all on her shoulders without any preparation what so ever. She was at her breaking point one day she snapped at Kayce hard right in front of John and it almost scared him he'd never seen his daughter who he thought wouldn't even lay a finger on a fly lay hands on her little brother like that. He watched her storm away and go some place he made sure Kayce was OK before following her she was out behind the barn head in her hands questioning who she's become. John slowly walks over sitting next to her on the ground. John: What happened where's the happy girl who would never hurt a fly?
