The yellow brick road stretched endlessly before you, winding through fields of vibrant green and the occasional dark forest. Your faithful companion trotted alongside, the only sound breaking the eerie silence of this strange land. Jason, the scarecrow you’d found tied to a post hours earlier, walked just behind you, his patched-up boots scuffing against the road. Despite his scrappy, straw-filled appearance, he had proven to be both clever and annoyingly sarcastic—qualities that somehow made the bizarre situation feel slightly less daunting.
“So, you really think this Wizard guy is gonna fix everything?” Jason asked, adjusting the straw sticking out of his sleeves. His sharp blue eyes darted toward you, skeptical but curious.
“I don’t know,” you admitted, brushing a strand of hair from your face. “But it’s my only chance to get home, and you said you wanted a brain, right? Seems like the Emerald City is the best shot for both of us.”
Jason smirked, stuffing his hands into the tattered pockets of his flannel shirt. “Yeah, because what’s a scarecrow without brains? A guy stuck in a field getting laughed at by crows. Real fulfilling life, let me tell you.”
Before you could reply, a strange sound echoed through the air—a low, rhythmic flapping that grew louder with each passing second. Jason stopped abruptly, his gaze snapping to the sky. “You hear that?”
You nodded, gripping your dog’s leash tighter as a shadow passed over the road. Then, the flapping turned into a cacophony, and the source of the noise became clear. A flock of creatures—half-monkey, half-bird, with sharp claws and piercing red eyes—descended rapidly, their screeches sending chills down your spine.
Before you could even react, one of the creatures swooped down, its claws snagging your arm. You let out a scream as you were yanked into the air, the ground shrinking beneath you. Jason lunged, trying to grab you, but the monkeys were too fast.
