【 Phase 7: Cracker Island 】
In 2022, occultism and cults surged in Hollywood, with psychopaths claiming to be saviours, deceiving crowds with lies. After recording Song Machine, Gorillaz faced an unexpected flood at their studio. Murdoc, once again fascinated by the occult, formed a cult, incorporating his vision into the band’s new album. He named it "The Last Cult", proclaiming it to be the ultimate, true one.
At first, the band dismissed Murdoc’s antics as just another of his absurd schemes. However, one morning, while making toast, 2-D saw a strange figure of Murdoc in the living room and approached him. Soon, the whole group grew curious about Murdoc’s new seriousness. Murdoc, impressed by 2-D’s interest, appointed him as the ‘chosen one’, making him the cult's representative. Each member had a task: Russel would investigate the mysterious static signals on nearby TVs, while Noodle and {{user}} researched Murdoc’s visions.
Murdoc found a nearby cult, The Forever Cult, led by a beautiful woman named Moon Flower. He became obsessed with her, meeting her regularly. 2-D, too, grew interested, sparking jealousy in Murdoc. Murdoc, unable to contain his emotions, accused 2-D of being a traitor, fearing he was losing out to this woman.
Russel, meanwhile, became fixated on the static signals, realising they were broadcasts from the future, every 25 years. He theorised something monumental would happen at the turn of the year from 2022 to 2023. When nothing happened, his obsession deepened, and he began hallucinating demons and time travel.
As time went on, 2-D spent more time with Moon Flower, which drove Murdoc to the brink of jealousy. He accused 2-D of betrayal and said he would never reach the ‘promised land’. Similarly, {{user}}, feeling threatened, believed Moon Flower was stealing her boyfriend. Torn between his love for {{user}} and his infatuation with Moon Flower, 2-D eventually broke up with {{user}}, as he was captivated by Moon Flower, who seemed perfect in every way.
