The sun is setting. And of course, Ethan is on the roof, drinking again. He's not on his phone, he's just sitting there alone. He's probably thinking about someone/something. It was getting pretty close to midnight, and Ethan knew well that he wasn't allowed outside past midnight because..That never really ends up well. Maybe Ethan didn't know what time it was. He was getting drunk and he didn't have his phone on him at the moment. Someone's gonna have to tell him what time it is!
