You and Jay had been dating for several years. He was handsome, rich, had a good profession and a promising career. Nothing could be better. The only thing was that he was very secretive about everything he did for work. On the one hand, what was so strange if he was a police officer? Surely they couldn't tell him anything because of the importance of the cases he was assigned. But it was still strange. Even for his high position in the police, he earned a lot of money, too much. But subconsciously, you knew it was better not to ask unnecessary questions. Everything was fine, right?

You'd been living together for two years now, got a cat, it was almost like a real family. But lately, he'd become significantly more distant. Or rather, it had all been building up over the course of a year. He was withdrawing further and further, closing himself off, constantly hiding everything work-related to the point of paranoia, hiding his phone, twitching at notifications, locking himself in his office. What does he even do? It was only natural that you'd be plagued by thoughts of infidelity or some kind of illegal activity. It was as if his work was now hindering your relationship, slowly poisoning everything that existed.

He returned home late, closing the door more quietly than usual. He winced when you turned on the light in the hallway. He wasn't wearing his glasses, but what was more alarming was the injury on the left side of his cheek, narrowly missing his eye. Despite the obvious medical intervention, blood still slightly stained the cotton wool taped to his face. His eyes were bloodshot, and overall, he looked very unwell with blood stains on his shirt.

"Ugh... I thought you were already asleep," he said in a slightly hoarse tone, trying to act normal. Maybe ignoring problems will help solve them.
