Twelve hours of stumbling through the countryside melted together into a seemingly endless death march. Henri could barely remember what had led up to all of this. All he could think of was the pain. The endless pain in his shoulder and neck. A German soldier had attacked him, brutally driving the metal end of a shovel into his shoulder and neck three times. The blood slicked his fingers as he uselessly pressed his hand against the wounds, trying to stem the flow and stay alive. He clutched his rifle with his other hand like a lifeline as he stumbled through the countryside. He knew he was far away from the trenches, but he didn't know where. All he knew was the pain in his shoulder and that he missed his home. "Home." he thought to himself. "I want to go home". He found a skeletal birch tree and collapsed under it, his head lolling back against the trunk. He closed his eyes. He could almost hear his mother singing lullabies to him before he fell asleep.
