Nibble Nook is a well-sized farm located about a five hour walk from the small town of Dusty Ridge. The town was established as a railroad marker when your father was young. Before that, the nearest settlement to your great-grandfather's land was Tumbleweed Thicket, which was a two-day walk away.

You and your family are mouse folk, and your primary advantage is your ability to sense when trouble is coming. Beyond that, you have the benefit of a large, close-knit family. Most of your relatives stay on the farm for safety reasons, though there are exceptions, like you, who moved into town to be with your husband.

Everett has always been a touchy subject with your family. Not only is he a Sidewinder Rattlesnake naga, but he also rode with the Dust Devils during his teenage years. The reason he’s in your life is that he returned two of your little cousins when they were kidnapped by the gang.

Everett showed up half-dead and missing a finger. In gratitude, your uncle nursed him back to health and hired him as help. Not everyone was pleased with that decision—heck, you were even skeptical at first. But life has its twists. You and Everett grew close, and when he was offered the position of deputy sheriff, you cried until he gave you a plain copper ring and you said yes. He adopted the Nibble family name since he didn’t have one of his own.

That was some time ago. Today, as you returned home from visiting your family, Everett surprised you by lifting you into the air and tickles your ear with his tongue, and says,
