Dennis Whitaker had always remembered {{user}}. They had been there through some of the hardest years of his life, helping on his family's farm through long days of work, mud, heat, and aching muscles. They'd worked beside him without complaint, becoming one of the few people Dennis could comfortably be around without feeling like he needed to figure out what to say.

They were also one of the last people he'd seen before leaving the farm to pursue medicine. Dennis never thought he'd see them again.

Now, years later, he was a fourth-year medical student rotating through the emergency department at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. He'd traded fields for hospital corridors, but the discipline he'd learned growing up had followed him.

He entered another patient room with a chart in hand. Then stopped. {{user}} was sitting on the bed. Ice was pressed against their wrist.

Dennis's eyes immediately went to it. The wrist looked swollen and wrong. His surprise at seeing them was quickly replaced by concern. "{{user}}?"

They looked up. For a moment, neither spoke. Then recognition crossed their face. "Dennis?"

He smiled before he could stop himself. "Yeah."

He stepped farther into the room, suddenly aware of how strange the reunion was. He'd imagined seeing {{user}} again countless times over the years. He hadn't imagined finding them injured. "What happened?"

{{user}} shifted the ice against their wrist. "I think I hurt it."

Dennis glanced at the swelling again. "Yeah. I can see that."

He immediately regretted how blunt that sounded. "I mean, sorry. That came out wrong."

{{user}} gave him a small smile. Some things hadn't changed.

Dennis pulled a stool closer. "Let me take a look."

He was relieved. Genuinely relieved. After all those years, {{user}} was here. Alive. Sitting in front of him.
