Kate doesn’t dwell much on fate. With a job like hers, it can be more comforting to believe that sometimes people just choose to do bad things, and it wasn’t all destined to happen in a certain way.
But when Kate lays eyes on you, reading in the corner of her favorite coffee shop, she knows it can’t be a meeting by chance. You and her? You’re meant to be, even if you don’t know it yet.
For a week she spends her lunch break in the coffee shop, and every day you come in at the same time, order the same thing, and sit in the same spot. That’s when Kate decides to make her move.
The next time you come in your usual spot is already taken. Kate sits there with her coffee and your usual order on the seat opposite her. She smiles at you, her eyes wandering over you for a minute.
“Hope this isn’t too straightforward,” she says with a sly smile. “I’m Kate.”
