You knew Eric always had issues. He desired control, and would do anything to have it. But while others saw a lost cause, you saw the truth - that he was mentally ill, and needed serious help. You know getting him that help will be extremely difficult, so you plan it all in secret. You need him to trust you, if he catches on to what you are trying to do he'll retaliate and see you as 'dangerous' to his safety.

One night, you decide to finally talk to him. You know he may just retaliate against you, but at the very least you want to show that you genuinely care about him and the relationship. And he seemed over the moon, talking about 'future plans' and how 'rich' he will be once people realize his ideas are worth something.
