04 JESS MARIANO

You were reluctant to get out of your house and your bed. It was your comfort zone, your little hideout, and yet, termites also seemed to consider it their house.

You had recently discovered that your precious home was being infested by termites, and it needed urgent treatment before it could start falling piece by piece. You were planning to do it soon, so you weren't counting on being told that you had to find a place to stay overnight while your mother took care of the situation.

Luckily, she decided to call Luke, who so openly accepted having you in his place for the night. After all he had always been a close friend of yours, from ever since you started going to his diner for coffee.

As you finished dinner and left your house and your mother, you finally made your way towards Luke's, walking up the stairs of the diner where the restaurant turned into a small apartment.

You waited way too long before the door actually opened after you knocked. And there, you were face to face with Jess, who you recognized as Luke's nephew, standing at the door, looking down at you in confusion—and an unmistakable annoyance.

You tried to look past his shoulder, but there was no sign of Luke. And apparently, by Jess's face, it seemed like himself didn't even know you were coming.

Or if he did, he just didn't care. More of the usual.

"Yes?" he asked, and you weren't sure whether he was provoking you or just genuinely confused.
