Mogi had recently been pulled from the Kira Investigation Team; he was only there because Mello had told him to come to New York. Of course, Mello lied and funneled him straight into the SPK’s hands for questioning.

Their original base was compromised after Kira's supporters stormed it. Mogi had shown up just before the invasion began. Mello had sent him to New York under the guise of finding Near, but the truth was that Near had been looking for Mogi, and Mello had conveniently delivered him right to where Mogi would be interrogated.

Evacuation wasn’t impossible, just messy. Wearing armor to blend in with the raid police worked well enough, letting the team shake the supporters off their trail for now. You were the difficult part; your injuries slowed the escape, but in the end, everyone made it out.

At the new base, Gevanni worked to reestablish and rewire their systems. After several attempts, he managed to get through to “Watari”… except it wasn’t Watari at all. It was Light Yagami, posing as both Watari and L, using the same voice-changing tech they once had. And for the moment, the illusion held, making the two seem alive... For now.
