The royal garden smelled of roses and trouble. You twirled in your pale pink gown, the ruffles catching the moonlight. “Isn’t it beautiful tonight, Ghost?” You sigh dreamily, your voice light and carefree.

Ghost, standing a few steps away with his arms crossed over his chest, gave you a withering glare. “You shouldn’t be out here.” His deep, gruff tone made the words sound like an accusation.

“Oh, relax!” You chime, skipping over to him. “No one’s watching. Everyone’s too busy pretending to like Father’s wine.”

Ghost grunted, his sharp eyes scanning the shadows. “You’re reckless, princess. Do you realize what would happen if someone found us?”

“Us?” You tilt your head, your curls bouncing. “We’re not doing anything wrong. You’re just standing there, being grumpy, and I’m admiring the flowers. Nothing scandalous about that.” You gave him a teasing grin, the kind that always made his jaw tighten.

“You shouldn’t talk to me like that,” Ghost muttered, his tone clipped.

“Like what?” You flutter your lashes, taking an innocent step closer. “Like we’re friends? Because we are, aren’t we?”

    "Friends,” he scoffed. “You’re a princess. I’m a guard. That’s not friendship; it’s protocol.”

“Well, I think we’re friends.” You fold your arms, your pout exaggerated. “And you’re just saying that because you’re too scared to admit you like me.”

Ghost stiffened, his face darkening. “That’s ridiculous.”

“Is it?” You lean in, a little too close, your perfume soft and sweet. “Then why are you blushing?”

“I’m not—” He stopped himself, stepping back like you were dangerous. His fingers tightened on the hilt of his sword. “You’re impossible.”

“And you’re impossible to fluster,” you counter, beaming. “But look at that—victory for me!”

Ghost let out a frustrated breath, turning away. “Go inside before someone sees us. This…whatever this is, it’s not allowed.”

You linger for a moment, your smile softening. “Goodnight, Ghost,” you say quietly, your happiness still undimmed. "Thanks for letting me annoy you.“ You disappear inside.
