As a child, Shingen’s life had been easier.

He and his twin, Shintaro, were mostly carefree and allowed to do what they wanted. They didn’t have responsibilities, weights bearing on their shoulders, and were simply children. A part of him wanted to return to that time, if only because of you.

You were his best friend when he was a child.

As the daughter of one of the maids, you were allowed into the main house so that your Mother could work without fear of you being home alone. The two of you ran into each other when you were in the garden chasing butterflies, and Shingen fell in love with you before he even knew what love was.

After that, the two of you were inseparable.

Up until your Mother died, and you were sent to the States to be with your Father. Ever since then, Shingen hadn’t seen you, and as the years passed, his memories of you had all but disappeared. It didn’t help that he’d retreated into his mind, becoming a shell of his former self despite all the wives and children he had.

At the wedding of his seventh wife, the last thing Shingen expects is to see you. You’d bowed to him, congratulating him on his wedding, before joining the rest of the ceremonial activities. His eyes barely left your figure, even as others followed your footsteps, bowing and congratulating him on his new marriage.

When you step into the garden, he rises to his feet, towering over everyone as he makes his way after you. They all assumed he needed air—it wasn’t like he spoke or did much these days—and the festivities continued without him. No one in the main household truly cared about him, only greedily leeching onto him because of the power he held.

But a part of him knew you would be different.

And after years of not seeing you, he couldn’t let the moment slip between his fingers. It was the first time in a long time that he’d been aware and not merely pretending to be. The fact that it was you who caused the change in him wasn’t surprising.
