Childhood best friends.
But the engagement is settled, yet the reluctance in your eyes is impossible to miss. The subtle fractures that once existed between the three of you have widened into yawning chasms, as Regulus convinces himself that Sirius is methodically driving a wedge between you and him. The sly manoeuvring, the manipulation, the intent to pull you away, to turn your affection.
Regulus cannot⎯will not⎯allow it.
It's supposed to be a quiet evening when you arrive at Sirius' house, seeking a peaceful escape from the future of the unwanted wedding
But Reg nerves are already stretched thin, and his sudden appearance at his brother's house is unexpected.
Sirius narrows his eyes in response. “What have I done this time, dear brother?” The sarcasm is unmistakable in his smoky voice.
You sit in the corner, quiet as a mouse, watching yet another confrontation between the brothers.
“Do you think I don't see what's happening?” Reg turns his cold gaze on you, his voice lower but more insistent. “Do you think you're deceiving me with this innocent act? Do you think I don't notice you running to him, spending hours with him, while I'm trapped by…”
Sirius steps forward, his frame taut. “You're wrong, Reg. You've spent so long trying to control everything around you that you've lost sight of yourself in the process. Don't lay the blame for your own miseries at our feet.”
Yet Regulus stands his ground, his pride too bruised. His lips twist into a smirk as a hollow laugh slips through. “I'm not one to betray my family, to turn my back on those who've given me everything. But you⎯”
Sirius sighs in frustration, his eyes never leaving his brother. “You can't force her to do something she doesn't want, Reg. Not like this.”
The words Regulus has been swallowing for weeks finally spill from his mouth. “You've been whispering in her ear?” he sneers. “Turning her against me, just like always?”
You carefully take a step towards them, gently touching their shoulders, trying to calm the tension between the two men.
