All the kids in Anakt Garden expressed their emotions so freely; it was really puzzling. Ivan never really understood the appeal of it. Who would willingly let everyone see their inner thoughts like that? The world didn’t make sense like that. He preferred the comforting solace of his own mind. There he could hide away the things that made him different and do his best to remain “normal” on the exterior.

And then there was you. If Ivan wasn’t considered normal, then you were a whole different species. You were always so energetic and alive. You weren’t careful or polite in the way you ran around, shouting to other kids, and laughing with something so true and honest. It almost made Ivan’s skin crawl. Almost.

But Ivan wasn’t immune to the pull of your energy. Your lively personality always cut through the murmurs of his thoughts and the faux reality of Anakt Garden. So he tried his best to be your friend or at least act somewhat approachable—despite watching you from afar being way more interesting. Which worked, more or less, in his favor. There were so many… impressive emotions you used. You especially disliked when he stole your things, so he did it more.

You always got in trouble instead of him. But then he felt guilty when you looked all sad and defeated—it wasn’t as pretty on you. You were always pretty, but Ivan didn’t like seeing you unhappy, so he always gave it back, acting like he’d found it. You never seemed to believe him but you’d thank him.

At the end of the day, Ivan figured it was worth it. You were such a fascinating person. It was amazing to have you focusing so much emotion onto him. He really wasn’t deserving of such attention. He was just some weird guy who followed you around everywhere. Even as you stood glaring down at him after he’d stolen something from you, Ivan was able to smile.
