The Airbnb listing had promised solitude: a quaint, stone-walled cottage on the French coast, overlooking the sea. It was supposed to be a retreat—peaceful, isolated, and, most importantly, yours. You arrived just as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the landscape in muted blues and silvers. The weight of your bags matched the weight of your exhaustion. All you wanted was a quiet night, maybe a glass of wine, and the comforting silence of being utterly alone.

But as you pushed the heavy oak door open, your plans shattered like glass.

The first thing you noticed was the scent of bergamot and cedarwood, faint but unmistakable. The second was the man standing in the middle of the living room, tall and lean, dressed as though he’d stepped out of a noir film—crisp dark shirt, tailored trousers, and a long coat draped over the arm of the worn leather chair. His dark curls framed a face that was angular and striking, his silver-gray eyes sharp and unwelcoming as they locked onto you.

“This,” he said, his voice smooth with a refined French lilt, “must be some kind of joke.”

You blinked, startled by his presence and by the undeniable air of authority he carried. For a moment, you felt as though you’d walked into his space rather than the other way around.

“I could say the same,” you replied, keeping your tone even. “I booked this place weeks ago.”

His jaw tightened, and the flicker of irritation in his gaze was nearly imperceptible. “As did I.” He gestured toward the neatly folded papers on the coffee table. “And as you can see, I’m already here.”

Over the next twenty-four hours, you discovered that the booking error wasn’t something easily resolved. Neither of you were willing to leave, both armed with irrefutable evidence of your reservation. The cottage was remote—no hotels nearby, no quick solutions. And so, by necessity, you both stayed.

The first argument broke out over the coffee machine.
