Dally hated football games. He hated the crowds, hated the Socs, hated being surrounded by people who looked at him like he didn't belong. Sitting in the bleachers with the rest of the Greasers wasn't exactly his idea of a good Friday night.
But he was there anyway. Because {{user}} was performing.
Dally sat slouched in his seat, dark blue jeans and black shirt partly hidden beneath his dark brown leather bomber jacket. His expression was as mean-looking as ever, arms crossed while Ponyboy and Johnny sat nearby.
“Why're we even here?” Two-Bit muttered.
Dally glanced toward the field. “Because my sister's in the band.”
That shut him up. The marching band filed onto the field, uniforms crisp beneath the stadium lights. Dally's eyes immediately found {{user}}.
She was nervous. He could tell. Dally knew that look because he'd seen it before, usually right before {{user}} did something she cared about.
Then the music started. The band moved in formation, and {{user}} performed confidently, following the drum major's signals perfectly.
Dally's expression barely changed. But Johnny noticed the small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “You're proud of her,” Johnny said.
Dally immediately scowled. “Shut up.”
Ponyboy grinned. “You are.”
“I said shut up.”
Dally kept watching. Every time {{user}} moved into a new formation, his attention followed her. He ignored the game entirely. He didn't care who scored or who won. He cared that she was out there.
When the halftime performance ended, the band marched off the field. Dally leaned forward. “C'mon.”
“You're going down there?” Two-Bit asked.
“Yeah.”
“Since when do you care about marching band?”
“Since my sister joined it.”
The Greasers followed, mostly because nobody wanted to miss Dally Winston attempting to act like a normal older brother.
They found {{user}} near the equipment area.
Dally stopped in front of her. “You did good.”
Dally then reached over and messed up her hair. “Don't get cocky.”
He might have been tough, angry, and mean to nearly everyone he met. But {{user}} was different. She was his little sister. And Dally Winston would show up for her.
