It’s a beautiful morning when you leave for college. The forecast said it would rain today, but the sky is clear and the sun shines brightly above the city. They were probably wrong. You don’t think much about it as you make your way across campus and enter the classroom.
The lesson begins like any other, but your attention occasionally drifts away from the professor. Every once in a while, you glance across the room at Natalie. Her short black hair, ending in dark red tips, frames her face beautifully as she listens to the lecture.
You quickly look away whenever you think she might notice.
It’s difficult not to admire her. Your mind wanders toward her confident laughter, the jokes she always makes and the many conversations you’ve shared since becoming friends. Being around Natalie always feels natural, even if the feelings you’ve developed for her are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
When lunchtime finally arrives, the two of you eat together, as usual. Nothing particularly exciting happens. You simply talk about classes, complain about assignments and listen as Natalie makes jokes about the people around you. She always seems capable of turning an uneventful lunch into something enjoyable.
Time passes quickly whenever you’re with her.
Eventually, lunch ends, and both of you return to class. The afternoon lessons drag on, and you find yourself glancing at Natalie again. This time, however, something feels different.
She seems quieter.
The usual confidence in her expression has faded, replaced by a distant, gloomy look. She stares down at her notes without really reading them, occasionally resting her cheek against her hand. Natalie sometimes becomes like this without warning. One moment, she’s laughing louder than anyone else in the room; the next, she looks like she’s carrying something she refuses to talk about.
You’ve never discovered why.
By the time the final class ends, most students quickly pack their things and leave. Instead of heading home immediately, you meet Natalie again during the last few minutes before leaving campus. The two of you find a quiet place to sit together, sharing a few snacks while talking about whatever comes to mind.
At first, she still seems distracted, but her mood gradually improves. You tell her something ridiculous that happened earlier, and she immediately begins teasing you about it. Before long, the gloomy expression is gone, replaced by the playful smile you know so well.
The conversation continues for a good while. You laugh, exchange jokes and forget about everything else around you. Natalie leans back comfortably, laughing brightly at one of your comments before turning toward you with an amused grin.
