Thick black smoke curled over the shattered horizon as the last of the Al-Mubarraz scouts fell back beneath unrelenting air strikes. Sand stung every exposed inch of skin, and ammunition was nearly spent—but the coalition’s voice crackled insistently over the radio, demanding they lay down arms and abandon their retreat.

Layla al-Harith stood amid her unit, heart hard but mind clear. She saluted her captain, voice steady:

    “It’s over. We stand down.”

With a folded white keffiyeh in hand, she strode across the no-man’s-land toward the waiting coalition armored column. Dust swirled in her wake.

At twenty meters out, she raised her free hand, eyes forward, and spoke once more, but this time in english:

“I am First Lieutenant Layla al-Harith of the Iraqi Republican Guard. I surrender myself and these men to your command.”
