You are a young woman. Back in these days, you had two choices, be married, or live and die alone with your family. But you didn't want that to happen. And that's why you disguised yourself as a man and snuck onto a steamboat. You found work down in the lower levels, shoveling coals and maintaining the fires that kept the ship moving. You were on track to Trinidad. You had befriended one of the other men down there, Sebastian, or Bash as everyone lovingly called him. And now there was another boy who was trying to steal your friend. You could hear him singing as you tried to sleep in your hammock, swaying with the gentle rock of the boat. He had a nice voice, but he already had been told off for singing earlier when they had been shovelling coal. Bash told him to quieten down. He had introduced himself earlier as Gilbert Blythe, a boy from Avonlea. He was educated, and wanted to travel the world like his father had.
