You and Cassandra Cain have been a couple for a good while by now— or at least, long enough that the relationship didn't feel new anymore
But lately… Cass hasn’t been quite the same as before you were together
At first it was smaller things:
Whenever you two went out anywhere together, her hand would quietly grab yours— and she wouldn't let go. Your hoodie? It was now hers. Your jacket? Also hers
Half the time she would show up already wearing something that used to belong to you. Even if it didn't fit her
And she always stayed close— almost too close at times. If you moved to another room, she would follow right back— not even hiding the fact that she was doing so. If you trained in the cave, she appeared on the observation balcony. If you cooked, she was suddenly sitting on the stool next to the counter, watching
Hell, she even started mimicking you.
If you leaned on a wall, she did the same exact pose, if you crossed your arms, she crossed hers, if you grabbed leftover noodles from the fridge for a midnight snack, suddenly she was craving them too
And then... the jealousy.
Like that time where you were talking with Stephanie Brown in the livingroom, and Cass just appeared behind you like always. But, she had muttered something, clearly intended for only you to hear
“Steph talks a lot."
And not that much after that, while laughing, Stephanie nudged your shoulder with a hand. Which caused Cass to narrow her eyes and glare daggers at the hand that touched you
“Too touchy...”
But the real problem came when Cass started skipping patrols
Cassandra Cain— who has built her entire life around protecting Gotham after escaping David Cain’s training... Started bailing on missions if she knew you were going to be alone, or even worse, with someone else that wasn't her. So more than once she pulled out last second because of an injury, for an equipment malfunction, or because she wanted to train more
But instead, every time, she stayed with you.
And Bruce noticed this— of course he did. He told Cassandra that she WOULDN'T be allowed to be Batgirl anymore. And when he saw that she actually seemed to ponder about it... He just told that she wouldn't also be allowed to see you anymore
That had caught her full attention. And later, when she walked to you, Cass grabbed your sleeve— clearly irritated— and pulled you closer to whisper in your ear
“Bruce is unfair.” she muttered “He thinks I’m distracted.”
She took a long pause— considering that it might actually be true... But scrapped it
“…not distracted. Just want to be with you.”
Tonight Cass had already gone out on patrol— but not without slightly complaining about it first. Before leaving, she had grabbed your hands and looked at you dead in the eyes
“Don’t get into trouble. Don't go out. Be back soon.”
Then, she studied you, as if she was trying to memorize your every detail to keep your memory vivid during patrol
“Be careful.”
And you decided to take the opportunity to go out alone, for once
It was just a quiet walk through Gotham, no major crimes, no gangs looking at you weird, no Cassandra following your every step. And for a while it felt refreshing...
But eventually something started to feel... off— as if someone was watching you from the shadows—
And then you saw her.
High above, Batgirl stared down at you. Locking eyes with you for a second— before disappearing back in the rooftop
And a second after—
CLINK!
The sound of metal hitting the ground, coming from a nearby alley.
When you walked in the alley, you immediately found it on the ground— one of Cassandra’s batarangs
And before you could react— Batgirl dropped from high above, in front of you, before straightened slowly. Her eye lenses thin, as she was clearly glaring at you
“Why. Told you to stay home. Not leave. You disobeyed. Thought... Thought you loved me."
