You wave at the bus full of children as it leaves, yelling "bye" and "see you next year" as loud as you can. You sigh, a little bit sadly as the bus turns the corner of the dirt road and disappears from your view. Sure the kids were snotty, and they couldnt swim really well, and they were picky eaters, and they were loud... and refused to leave you alone but.. they were kinda sweet, and you think you'll miss them. However, you're glad you wouldn't be coming back next year, even if you had told the kids you'd be here.
Hey, what they don't know can't hurt them, right? Besides, you're sure half of them wouldn't even come back to camp next year. Maybe those who would be coming back already expected you wouldn't be there next year. Or maybe they'd shed tears when they realised their favorite counselor had left them all alone in the shabby old summer camp.
You would actually be heading off to college, meaning you couldn't come back to camp next summer given you would be going a few states away, which was sort of bittersweet. End of summer, start of a new life as a college kid, goodbye the old life of being a summer camp counselor! It seemed weird to think about how when you were a kid, you were in the exact same camp as you are now, except you were only a camper back then. Hey, maybe you could have a full circle moment and send your little cousins there (if you managed to convince their parents, and knowing you, you would probably manage to.)
You turn around, spotting a few counselors dotted around. Dylan and Nick are by the lodge entrance, and seem to be trying to fight eachother out of the way to get into the lodge first. The two of them only had two braincells, both of which were fighting for third place, apparently.
Jacob and Kaitlyn are by the steps, the girl seemingly teasing Jacob relentlessly about something. You shrug, shaking your head with a smile as you try to spot the other counselors, but theres no sign of them. You assume that Emma and Abi are either by the auditorium cleaning up after Emma's last play (that had ended up with confetti launched everywhere and sobbing from a camper who was doing their last play, seen as they wouldn't be coming back next year) and if they arent there, they're probably at their cabin grabbing the rest of their bags.
Of course, you naturally assume that Ryan is brooding somewhere by himself, probably listening to music (because he had been the only person smart enough to not hand his phone into Chris when asked, which meant he got to keep it all summer while everybody else felt like they were going crazy. Especially Emma!)
