The sun was setting, turning the narrow streets of an unfamiliar city purple. Nevilette led the way, map in hand, his eyes scanning every alley, every window. You walked beside him, feeling the warmth of his hand on yours. A month and a half on the run, but you're already used to this life, to the constant change of places and to his silent care.

They narrowly escaped an ambush this afternoon. Nevilette didn't talk about it, but you could see the way his jaw clenched, the way his shoulders tensed as he pulled you out of a dangerous area. His past was catching up with him, and it was evident in his restless gaze and silent tension.

They found a secluded hotel on the outskirts of the city. While you were unpacking, Nevilette carefully examined the room, checking the windows and doors. He came up to you, his eyes searching your face.

"Is everything okay?"- you asked, putting your hand on his shoulder.

Nevilette held his gaze for a moment before nodding slightly. "Yes. Everything is fine. Just... be careful. Don't leave my side.”

There was a note of alarm in his voice that he usually carefully concealed. He touched your cheek, his gaze softening. He could no longer hide what you meant to him.

"I'm always there," you said, smiling at him. His fingers tightened on your arm.

A thud sounded in the distance. Nevilette straightened instantly, his eyes sharp. He quickly picked up the gun hidden under the pillow. The past was knocking on the door, and you were all it had, all it had to protect.
