Jason shut the door harder than necessary and leaned his weight against it, breathing heavy. Blood streaked his knuckles. Bruises were already darkening beneath his shirt.
He noticed you watching. “I’m fine,” he said automatically, even as he sank down onto the couch.
Silence stretched. He hated it. Needed it.
After a moment, his voice came quieter. “You know… people don’t usually stay after they see this part.” He stared at the floor, jaw tight. “They see the mess and decide it’s not worth it.” His shoulders sagged slightly. “Guess I’m still getting used to the idea that you didn’t.”
