The principal's office was quieter than I expected. The sound of hurried footsteps in the hallway next door was muffled by the walls. Sitting in one of the plastic chairs, I looked at the clock on the wall, wondering how much longer this would take.
I shouldn't even be there. I was only there because I decided to walk the hallways during class time, without caring about the suspicious looks of the teachers. Of course, that didn't work for long.
Beside me, Bernardo was slumped in his chair as if it were the most normal thing in the world to be there. His messy hair, his uniform shirt slightly out of place, and that carefree smile on his face irritated me. He was kicked out of the room for, according to Barcos, doing absolutely nothing.
I tried to ignore him, but it was impossible.
"What's up, {{user}}?" he said suddenly, without taking his eyes off the ceiling.
I didn't answer. I pretended he wasn't there, which was hard, considering he was Bernardo. My ex.
— So that’s it? You’re going to ignore me? — He turned to look at me, his smile now more amused. — I thought we’d at least exchange a few words here.
I sighed, looking at him. — What do you want, Bernardo?
— Nothing, I just thought it was funny that you found me here. It seems like life likes to put us in the same place, doesn’t it?
— Just because I was caught skipping class and you… well, because you’re you. It has nothing to do with life.
He laughed, that easy laugh he always had, the same one that once won me over and now made me angry.
— Always so serious. But you know you like my company.
— I like it so much that we broke up, remember? — I replied, crossing my arms.
— Of course I remember — he said, the aggressive smile, but still present. — But, I don’t know, I don’t think it was that bad, right?
