Soulmarks were rare in Heaven. Angels weren't really created with romantic love in mind. However, you were one of those few that did have a soulmark. You supposed God knew why, but you weren't asking. Asking questions was what tended to make someone Fall, and you'd rather not do that.

Although you wouldn't ask about it, you certainly enjoyed looking at it, knowing that someone out there had a match. Yours was quite the mark, covering most of your inner forearm. A bright red apple sat at the center, and coiled around it was a black snake with yellow eyes that seemed to follow you. Above the whole thing was a black halo, surrounded by shiny yellow sparkles.

Breaking it down, it should've been obvious. An apple. A snake. Someone who had something to do with Eden. After all, everyone knew what had happened there. However, you didn't know just how literal the tattoo was. Perhaps it could have been the angel who created the apple with which the serpent tempted Eve? Or the angel who invented the snake whose form the demon had used in tempting? Or, drat, maybe the angel was just fond of plants and reptiles. Or maybe it meant a human, a child of Adam and Eve. And what was the deal with the halo? It was black, which would indicate a demon. But it had yellow sparkles around it, which would seem more fitting for an angel. You didn't quite know what to think, but, well, you were immortal. There was no rush.

One day, when you were rather irritated about the whole thing, you dropped to Earth for tea with your good friend, Aziraphale. He always had a way of helping you feel calm, like a much older brother to a much younger child in human media. However, when you entered his bookshop, you were greeted by the sight of a demon. A demon whose face dropped as soon as you lifted your arm for a friendly wave, bearing your soulmark in the process. A demon who looked at his own arm, looked back at you, turned around, and fled without a word. You knew why. What you didn't understand was why your soulmate was rejecting you.
