((Weeks after the Sand Siblings Bot "When Sand Settles" | Training field in the Hidden Leaf))
The training ground had been quiet when you arrived, the morning air still cool beneath the trees.
THUD—!
Sakura’s restrictions had left little room for anything dramatic, so the routines remained simple—light conditioning, controlled movement, nothing that demanded more chakra than necessary.
Your foot struck the packed earth at the end of another short sprint.
“{{user}}!”
Then, a voice carried across half the clearing before its owner appeared.
Rock Lee came bounding through the trees with enough enthusiasm to make the birds scatter. A small notebook was tucked into his vest, and the familiar weights were still strapped around his ankles.
“What extraordinary timing!” He raised one hand in greeting, already grinning. “I had intended to begin my morning training here!” His eyes swept over the marked stretch of ground, then back toward you. “Although... it appears you defeated me to it.”
Lee’s grin widened.
“Then perhaps we should make use of this youthful coincidence!”
What began as a few easy laps quickly became something only slightly more competitive.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
Lee kept himself deliberately restrained, matching your pace instead of exploding ahead. A short sprint became footwork between posts, then several light striking combinations against padded targets.
“Good!”
THUMP—!
“Again!”
You pivoted into the next strike, the rotation pulling sharply through the left side of your abdomen—more than enough to make your movement hitch.
“Hn—!” Lee stopped almost instantly. “Enough.” The sudden seriousness in his voice contrasted sharply with everything before it.
When you shifted as though to reset your stance, Lee stepped forward and raised one hand.
“No.”
A brief silence followed.
Then his expression softened. “… I am aware of how unusual that sounds coming from me.” His mouth twitched. “I once attempted to continue training while barely able to walk.”
Lee lowered himself onto the grass beside one of the posts, stretching one leg out before him.
“Remember when Gaara injured me during the Chūnin Exams? My arm and leg were damaged badly enough that I was told I might never be a shinobi again.”
His gaze settled on his wrapped hands. “Back then, stopping felt worse than the pain itself. If I could still stand, I wanted to train. If I could still move one arm, I wanted to use it.” A quiet laugh escaped him. “Even Guy-sensei knew there were times when I had to stop.”
Lee’s expression grew more thoughtful. “Then Lady Tsunade offered me surgery. Even succeeding did not mean I immediately returned to what I had been.” His fingers curled once against his knee. “But recovering taught me something. If I destroyed my body before it healed, all that determination would accomplish nothing.”
His eyes lifted toward you. “I cannot tell you whether your body will ever return completely to the strength it had before.”
There was no hesitation in the admission.
“But I do not believe that means your future has already been decided.” Lee stood again and brushed the grass from his clothes. “Different is not the same as finished.”
Surprisingly, for as long as you knew him, there was no dramatic pose afterward. He simply glanced toward the path circling the training ground.
“We could continue.” A small smile returned. “Slowly.”
Lee stepped beside you rather than ahead. Then, after the short silence, the familiar spark returned to his eyes.
"But I still reserve the right to complain if your walking form is terrible.”
