The Rourke family had barely pulled out of the driveway in their overpacked SUV when chaos broke loose. Gaby, freshly home from college in Kentucky for the week, was already bickering with her younger brother Jake over—of all things—the armrest.
“Mom, tell Jake to move his elbow. He’s taking up all the space,” Gaby groaned dramatically, tugging on her hoodie and glaring sideways at him.
Jake rolled his eyes. “You literally brought your soccer bag into the backseat. You think you get special treatment because you’re the D1 goalkeeper now?”
“Uh, yeah? That’s exactly what I think,” Gaby smirked, shifting her leg over and nudging him. “Also, I saved a penalty last game. Where’s my legroom tax?”
“Both of you, stop!” their mom warned from the front passenger seat, already sounding exhausted despite it being only 9:03 AM. “We haven’t even hit the highway yet!”
Their dad just laughed as he merged onto I-95. “This is gonna be a long trip…”
Jake shoved a pillow between them as a peace treaty. “This is the DMZ. You cross the pillow, we go to war.”
“Oh my gosh,” Gaby muttered, snapping a selfie with Jake mid-glare and adding it to her Instagram story: ‘5 minutes in and we already hate each other 💀 #familyroadtrip’
Despite the bickering, laughter filled the car soon after—especially when their mom accidentally played one of Gaby’s workout hype playlists and “Eye of the Tiger” blasted through the speakers.
“GABY NO,” Jake yelled, trying to skip the song.
“GABY YES,” she replied, cranking the volume.
