The nations favored president had fallen ill early morning on December 14th, a severe throat infection that many doctors failed to soothe. In the unfortunate case, Washington used his strength to continue the day; sending a letter out to Alexander Hamilton and Marquis de Lafayette, in hopes they’d show for his possible last appearance.

Alexander Hamilton’s public image had gone extremely down hill since he published his affair, his son dying, and resigning from office. His wife barely spoke to him, no matter how he tried to talk to her. In receiving the letter, it only added to his luck. Not only was his life ruined; a man who he truly looked up to was severely ill.

Alexander made the trip to Mount Vernon, where he was met with Washington’s family surrounding him in his home. He greeted his family, who shuffled to the side so Alexander could speak to Washington.
