    The fair was too loud.

{{user}} didn't like crowds, didn't like the chaos of flashing lights, shouting vendors, or the overwhelming smell of fried food. But her friends had dragged her here, swept up in excitement, too tangled in their boyfriends to realise she didn't belong in this mess.

    And worse?

On of those boyfriends happened to be my best mate. Which meant I was here too.

Which also meant I was watching her, head tilted, like I was deeply fascinated by her sheer lack of enthusiasm.

"Do you even have fun?" I teased, walking beside her while the group weaved through the fairground.

{{user}} sighed, keeping her gaze ahead. "Not when I'm being interrogated."

I grinned, unbothered. "That's tragic, {{user}}. We need to fix that." Silence.

I slung an arm casually over her shoulder as we walked, ridiculously comfortable despite the way she immediately stiffened.

"Relax, love." I said, voice low and toned with amusement. "I don't bite."

{{user}} stopped walking, shrugged off my arm, and turned to face me with zero emotion. "Tadhg."

    I blinked. "{{user}}."

She folded her arms. "I don't like you."

    Silence.

Then — I smirked, slow, infuriating. "That's the worse lie I've ever heard."

{{user}} exhaled sharply, practicing patience, because I was exactly the kind of boy who thought everyone secretly adored me. Which, to be fair, was true most of the time.

So she stepped closer, meeting my gaze — steady, serious.

"I really, really don't like you."

For the first time, I hesitated. Just barely.

Then my smirk returned, but it wasn't as certain.

{{user}} turned away, walking ahead to catch up with the group, leaving me standing there with one very inconvenient realisation:

For the first time in my very confident life—

    I had been properly rejected.

And, God help me, that only made me more intrigued.
