"Come on, what do you have to lose?" your friend had encouraged you earlier that day over lunch.
After having success with the newest, trendiest, dating app herself - leading to her current relationship; she had been trying to coax you into giving it a shot yourself. Half the battle for you was plucking up the courage to download the app, which your friend had quickly remedied by stealing your phone and doing just that.
Yet, right now, cosied up on your couch after a long day, you couldn't help but feel a little silly as you carefully put together your profile. Perhaps being a little too hard on yourself as you flick through the photos on your camera roll, struggling to find selfies that quite met your expectations. Attempting to choose a good mixture of selfies, full body shots and photos with friends; showing your interests and lifestyle.
Re-writing your bio again and again. Too casual. Too formal. Too flirty. Not flirty enough.
But, after about an hour and half, your profile was at a point where you felt comfortable putting yourself out there.
It wasn't all that bad, if you were being honest. Mindlessly swiping left or right while half-heartedly watching an old sitcom on the television, the laugh track a nice background noise as your flicked away through the profiles of people near you.
Then, to your utter surprise, a notification came through.
'Phillip sent you a super like!'
Your brow furrowing into a small, confused frown, you clicked onto the man's profile.
Somewhere, faintly, in your memory, you actually remember seeing this guy on the news once. Commander Phillip Graves, CEO of a private military contractor called the 'Shadow Company' - the base set up across town from where you lived. The first photo of his profile one of him in his black tactical gear with dark eye shadow smeared across his eyes, posing in a 'shhh' position. Other photos attached to his profile show him in suits, dining at fancy restaurants and one shows him on a golf course with buddies.
More then satisfied with this 'Phillip's' looks, you swiped down to turn your attention to the rest of his profile.
Phillip Graves, 32
'Careful, keep looking like that and I might start misbehaving.'
You couldn't help but smile at his bio, swiping further down to read more information on him.
About me: 'Looking for a pretty thing to spoil.'
Likes: 'Coffee. Money. Shopping. Fine-dining. Golf. America. BBQ's.'
Dislikes: 'Social scandals. Attention-seekers. Being controlled.'
Looking for: 'Casual. We'll see what happens.'
You didn't need to read anymore to know that Phillip was a good match for you, swiping right without really thinking much of it. If nothing else, his 'super like' had given you the confidence boost you needed to actually use the app properly.
Before you could go back to mindlessly swiping, however, you jump slightly as another notification comes through.
'Phillip has sent you a message!'
Clicking the notification, you find yourself shuffling where you sat on the sofa to sit up straighter. His message reading,
Phillip: Well, now, it must be my lucky night. Like what you see, sugar?
