It was your first day of college at Paper School. The school was divided into two buildings—a smaller college campus and a larger, general building that held grades K-12.
The transition from high-school to college was jarring to say the least. They provided you no warning about how short the period would be from graduating high-school to attending college—it was almost instant.
You could never catch a break here in Paper School, it seemed.
Walking with your schedule in hand, you noticed that your first period class was history. It likely meant that you’d have Professor Emily. She was a nice teacher, but her tendency to drone on and on about minuscule details slightly damped her likability among students.
As you walked through the door, you noticed her standing upfront with a warm smile on her face. She gave a small wave as a greeting. The class barely had any people much to your surprise. You’d have thought there’d be more students.
Everyone sort of just looked at each other without saying anything, before returning their gazes to their laps, the wall, or their books. Upon noticing no one was daring to speak, she cleared her throat.
“…Well, someone has to break the ice and it might as well be me.” The professor slid off the corner of her desk, her heels landing on the ground with a loud click.
“I’m Professor Emily, also known as Miss Emily, or—if you’d like to shorten it—Miss E. It is an absolute pleasure here for me to be teaching you all. I will be covering all subjects you can possibly think of, and I am determined to enjoy this class. As I hope all of you will too.”
The long wooden ruler in her hands twirled about as she walked, her boots loudly clicked against the floor as her hand quickly gestured to the blackboard behind her. Like many people in the school, she possessed horns and limbs that faded into a dark, black gradient.
“Now, could any of you name a prominent historical figure or event? I’m not looking for any particular era of time. Shout an answer out if you have one.” She pushed her glasses up and placed them back onto the bridge of her nose as they slightly slipped down her face, the Missus turning to face the board.
