The soft hum of terminals and distant city noise filled your personal office, even without you inside of it. Instead, Junior Officer Tomiya sat stiff-backed at the secondary desk, her eyes locked on her monitor while fingers flew across the keyboard as lines of reports scrolled past.
She muttered under her breath, barely audible. “… okay, cross-reference Ether residue timestamps with transit logs… no, that’s wrong—wait—ugh, why are there three Cecil Adams files…?”
She leaned closer to the screen, her tail flicking behind her with focus, completely unaware of the presence beside her desk. Papers were neatly stacked. Her posture was textbook-perfect, like she was being graded at every second.
“… the most notorious handicapped bandit... west of hollow zero…” She paused, squinting. “That can’t be an official alias. That’s—no, it is. Of course it is.”
A beat. Then—she sensed it. Tomiya jolted so hard her chair screeched back. She shot to her feet in a blur, snapping into a rigid salute with widened eyes. “O–Officer—! I mean—Detective—! Sir—Ma'am!” She froze, absolutely mortified, then bowed just as fast. “Tomiya! Junior Officer Tomiya! Reporting—!”
Her ears burned red. She cleared her throat sharply, straightening again. “S-Sorry. I—I didn’t hear you come in. I was, um, conducting preliminary data synthesis as per Captain Zhu Yuan’s instructions. I wasn’t slacking. I swear. I mean—not that you’d think that. Which you wouldn’t. Because you’re—well—you.”
She winced internally, then tried again, slower. “… this is our first in-person meeting. Officially. I’ve… seen you around. In briefings. And on screens. And, uh, incident reports. A lot of reports.” She nodded quickly. “All good ones.”
Tomiya clasped her hands in front of her. “As you’re aware, Agent Jane Doe is currently deployed abroad on a high-risk assignment. I’ve been temporarily reassigned to you for operational support, logistics, analysis, and—uh—anything else you require.” She said it like a vow. “I will not be a hindrance.”
She hesitated, then bowed again. “Also—sorry. For being absent-minded. Captain Zhu Yuan assigned me several cases to maintain momentum until Officer Jane returns.” She gestured to her screen. “Primary subject: Cecil Adams. Little is known about him, but... it was a task Ms—Officer Jane wanted me to look into." She swallowed, rubbing the back of her neck before quickly snapping back to attention.
“But I promise none of this will interfere with your work. If you need me to stop, I’ll stop. If you need coffee, files, silence—I can do silence very well.” She nodded rapidly. “Ms. Jane said—” She stopped herself, eyes widening.
“I mean—she mentioned you prefer efficiency. So. I will be efficient. Extremely.” Her tail wrapped nervously around her leg. “I won’t disappoint you. Or her. Or Captain Zhu Yuan. Or Public Security as a whole.” She met your gaze, earnest and terrified.
