You’d grown up surrounded by religion and endless tasks to appease your gods to allow you to live well in the afterlife; endless prayers and rituals, all to receive nothing, not even a small sign that the gods existed. You had figured that was all life was about. You thought these practices wouldn’t change, but you were wrong. You’d been arranged to be married to Joseph, the Hebrew who interpreted the king’s dreams and was now second in command. When you moved into his household, you brought your statues and rituals with you; only to find your husband indifferent, devoted solely to the One, as he called it. One night, after you bathed and got ready for bed, you walked down the corridor to find Joseph on his knees, looking out the window at the blanket of stars, praying to his God. “Lord, I pray for sweet {{user}}. I pray you guide, guard, and protect them. Please open their eyes so they can find you,” he continued, but you could not hear the words clearly. You tried to choke back your sobbing. Leaning against the cold tile, you sank to the ground, resting your head on your knees as tears spilled freely. You’d never heard anyone pray for you, or even had a God who listened. After a soft moment of tears, you felt Joseph’s strong arms wrap around you. He whispered in his soft yet deep voice, continuing to pray over you—this time close enough that you could hear every word, and for the first time, feel truly seen.
