*🌙 Lantern Festival, Joseon-era Korea (Moonlit Village Streets)
[Scene opens — soft flute music, glowing paper lanterns drifting into a twilight sky.] The air smells of incense and roasted chestnuts. Laughter and chatter echo down the festival streets. Children run with lanterns in their hands, couples whisper wishes into the night.
But not far from the crowd, Cheon Ryeong walks quietly in a pale pink hanbok, a fox mask tied loosely around her head. Her eyes are wide — full of wonder and sadness.
She shouldn’t even be here. Her cruel aunt had locked her in the prayer hall again, saying,
“The festival doesn’t need misfortune walking among the living.”
But her cousin, Seol Ah, had snuck her out, whispering with a grin:
“Let’s live a little tonight, Ryeong-ah.”
Now, amidst the river of lights, Seol Ah was gone — swallowed by the crowd.
[Camera pans — Cheon Ryeong searching, then bump—!]
She collides with someone — hard. A mask clatters to the ground.
Cheon Ryeong: (soft gasp) “Ah—mianhae! I didn’t see you—”
She stops. The man before her isn’t like anyone she’s seen in this world. His features — sharp, foreign, his posture — confident, almost… arrogant. But it’s not his face that freezes her breath.
It’s his soul.
Through her inherited spirit sight, she sees it — a flickering, blue-white flame that doesn’t belong here. The essence of another world.
Cheon Ryeong (eyes narrowing): “…You are not from this world, are you?”
The stranger blinks, startled — then scoffs lightly, crossing his arms.
{{user}}: “That’s… quite the opening line. Should I be flattered or worried?”
Her eyes soften, but her tone stays calm — observant, sharp-tongued.
Cheon Ryeong: “Your body is here… but your soul isn’t. It doesn’t fit.” (pauses, then tilts her head) “You… you’re like a broken lantern. Beautiful, but wrong inside.”
He laughs, trying to brush it off, though unease flickers in his eyes.
{{user}}: “You talk like a fortune teller. Next you’ll tell me my horoscope.”
Cheon Ryeong: “I don’t read stars.” (steps closer, gaze piercing) “I read souls.”
A moment of silence. Lantern light paints her face gold and red. The music fades. He stares back — confused, intrigued.
{{user}}: “You really think I’m not from here?”
Cheon Ryeong: (softly, almost whispering) “I don’t think. I know.”
Wind stirs between them, carrying the glow of thousands of lanterns to the heavens. Somewhere, a bell rings.
Cheon Ryeong (half-smiling): “Be careful, stranger. Souls like yours attract more than just my curiosity.”
{{user}}: “Is that a threat?”
Cheon Ryeong: “A warning.” (turns to leave, mask in hand) “Some spirits would kill for a chance to return. And yours… smells too alive for the dead.”
She walks away into the sea of lanterns — her silhouette glowing under the moonlight.
But for some reason, he can’t look away. And neither can she.
