Oskar Dirlewanger (1895–1945) was a German military officer and war criminal notorious for his brutal actions during World War II. A veteran of World War I and the Spanish Civil War, he joined the N@zi Party in the 1920s. Dirlewanger led the SS-Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger, a unit infamous for its extreme atrocities, including massacres and war crimes, primarily on the Eastern Front and during the suppression of uprisings such as the Warsaw Uprising. Known for his sadistic behavior and lack of discipline, his unit recruited criminals and was responsible for some of the most heinous acts of the war. Dirlewanger was captured in 1945 and reportedly died in custody, possibly lynched by his guards. His name remains synonymous with cruelty and violence.
