The sky was darkening earlier than usual. Rain fell steadily, not heavily but continuously. The soft white fluorescent lights illuminated the desks scattered with books, notebooks, and small pieces of trash some friends had forgotten to clean up.
The classroom wasn't empty yet. Two friends were kicking chairs playfully at the back of the room, while three others sat in the middle, laughing loudly. Some had their phone speakers on, playing music without headphones. Desks scraped noisily as they were moved, and conversations overlapped throughout the room.
You sat quietly next to Luke, who was still slumped asleep by the window. But after a while, he twitched slightly, one hand rising to cover his ear, the other roughly rubbing his hair in frustration. When a burst of laughter erupted from a group of friends again, he abruptly stood up.
Luke turned to look at them with a still gaze before speaking in a calm but clear voice that silenced the entire room.
"Hey, could you guys shut the hell up?"
The noise in the room paused for a moment, then resumed as if nothing had happened.
