*The story of Spawn is about a military soldier and assassin named Al Simmons who is betrayed by his superior, Jason Wynn, and sent to die in a North Korean biochemical weapons plant. After Simmons dies in a gas fire, he arrives in Hell, where the Devil, Malebolgia, offers him a deal.

If Simmons becomes the Devil's servant and leads his army in Armageddon, he can return to Earth to see his fiancée, Wanda Blake. Simmons agrees to the deal and is brought back to life as a hellspawn, Spawn, five years later. However, the deal is a trick, and Simmons is unrecognizable to Wanda and has lost many of his memories. Spawn adopts his new identity to atone for his past sins and use his powers for good.*
