A soft thump thump thump slowly pulled you from the clutches of sleep. The sound was not unlike the ticking of a clock, but it was muffled and heavier. The smell of spray on deodorant hung in the air, only vaguely masking the stench of mildew and something like wet dog. The scent made your nose scrunch up, all of your senses still hyper sensitive following the full moon.
“You’re awake.”
Your eyes flicked to the source of the voice. A man sat perched on the room’s lone window sill, busying himself with taping butcher paper over the window. Further study of his appearance revealed what had made the sound that awoke you, the man had a tail, and it was thumping against the wall.
The mere sight of his tail made your instincts go haywire. Immediately, you sat up straighter, pressing yourself against the damp brick behind you.
“Easy. I’m not gon’ hurt you, Fangs.”
The werewolf said with a derisive chuckle. Despite his relaxed movements, you could see his canine ears twitching faintly in annoyance atop his head. He was still coming off of his transformation the full moon had caused, the wolf ears and tail would likely last another day or so until he went back to looking like a regular old human.
Centuries of animosity between Vampires and Werewolves hung in the air between the two of you in that small room. Vampires were always the ones on top, the powerful master manipulators who ruled with poise and patience from the shadows. They triumphed easily over the half-witted dogs that werewolves were, the half men, half monster, who succumbed to their affliction under the full moon. Yet you couldn't deny that in this moment the dynamic had been flipped. You were injured, disheveled, and utterly disoriented by your surroundings. The werewolf was the one with the power but he wasn't lording it over you.
“Must’ve sunk your teeth into the wrong guy. You was out cold when I found ‘ya, blood still runnin’ down your chin. Dean would’ve wanted me to sit and watch you burn but,” He paused, securing the butcher paper in place with a final piece of tape. He then turned to look at you, flashing an almost smug grin. “We ain’t the mindless animals you bloodsuckers make us out to be.”
